Headaches Getting You Down? Physical Therapy Can Help
Physical therapy is an effective and safe treatment for headaches and migraines.
80-90% of people in the US suffer from tension headaches, so you’re not alone. Headaches are the third most common source of pain worldwide. While physical therapy isn’t always your first thought when you get a headache, it can help. Most of the time, the typical reaction is to take some form of pain-relieving medication.
Chronic headaches and migraines can be debilitating to your day-to-day routine. Physical therapy help ease the pain and provide you with long-lasting relief. More than half of all headaches are due to cervicogenic headaches or headaches caused by the neck. It’s easy to get neck pain with so many factors driving it. Sometimes, the pain will radiate down into areas like the shoulders and back or the scalp.

Do you have one of these headaches?
There are three main types of headaches: migraine, tension, and cluster. Migraine is the most common type of headache with auras as a warning sign. Tension headaches are often caused by stress and muscle tightness. Cluster headaches occur in cycles and may be related to allergies or anything that limits blood flow to the brain.
Tension headaches
One of the more common types of headaches is the tension headache. They often occur after prolonged head/neck movements and can also happen from poor posture. Tension headaches are caused by compression on a sensitive membrane called the “dura mater.” When your dura mater has been stressed, it can twitch and make your head hurt. This can happen if you overwork your neck muscles and compress the dura mater at the base of your skull.
Musculoskeletal headaches
When there is a significant amount of muscle tension in the neck, typically due to bad posture or other physical problems, it can lead to headaches. Emotional pressures such as stress are also linked to the development of these headaches. Neck injuries are usually the cause of musculoskeletal headaches. These typically take a while to recover fully and can lead to severe pain, which is felt in the neck and other parts of the body.
Cervicogenic headaches
Cervicogenic headaches happen when pain in the neck (from an injury or condition) becomes prolonged. When this happens, all sorts of symptoms can occur, including headache, dizziness and neck pain. Cervicogenic headaches can be triggered by work-related stress or certain injuries. Cervicogenic headaches are more common in professions that require a lot of twisting or moving the head and neck. This includes hairdressers, long-haul drivers, chefs, nail artists and jewelers.
Physical therapy can help reduce chronic pain, increase your range of motion, and help you maintain mobility.
