UNDERSTANDING YOUR PAIN

Neck Pain: what to expect and why it happens.

Where neck pain shows up

Neck pain can be sharp, dull, aching, or stiff. It can stay in one spot or travel into the shoulder, upper back, or down an arm.

Why it happens

Most neck pain is not caused by one single thing. It is usually a combination of muscle imbalances, posture patterns, joint stiffness, and sometimes nerve irritation.

COMMON CAUSES

THE WELLSPRING APPROACH

Why team-based care produces better results.

Neck pain almost always has more than one thing driving it. At Wellspring, your nurse practitioner, physical therapist, and massage therapist look at all of it together.

NURSE PRACTITIONER

What they contribute

Evaluates the root cause. Orders imaging or diagnostic testing when appropriate. Ensures your treatment plan has a solid medical foundation before hands-on care begins.

PHYSICAL THERAPY TEAM

What they contribute

Manual therapy, movement retraining, and targeted exercise to restore function and reduce pain. Your PT team works with you through every exercise. Identifies and corrects the muscle imbalances and movement patterns contributing to your pain.

MASSAGE THERAPIST

What they contribute

Targeted, therapeutic work designed to address the soft tissue tension and restriction that contributes to your pain. Coordinated with your PT plan. 60-minute sessions using deep tissue and hot stone techniques.

YOUR PATH TO RELIEF

What to expect when you come in.

01

First visit

Your first visit starts with a thorough consultation. We listen to your full history and explain what we are seeing.

02

During treatment

Most patients start noticing improvement within the first few visits. One-hour appointments with hands-on care.

03

Results

The goal is to address what is causing the pain so it does not keep coming back.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Most neck pain is musculoskeletal and treatable without surgery or medication. Pain that comes with arm weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain after a major fall or accident should be evaluated quickly. At your first visit, your nurse practitioner can help determine whether anything more urgent needs attention.

Yes, in most cases. Recurring neck pain is usually driven by posture, muscle imbalances, and movement patterns that have not been corrected. Physical therapy addresses those drivers directly. Many patients experience significant improvement within a few weeks of consistent care.

Yes. Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (headaches that originate in the neck) often respond very well to combined PT and therapeutic massage. We treat the headaches by treating the neck. Many patients notice their headaches reduce in frequency and intensity within a few weeks.

No. You do not need imaging before your first visit. If imaging would be helpful to clarify your diagnosis, your nurse practitioner can order it as part of your care.

Some patients notice meaningful improvement within the first few visits. Chronic or more complex cases take longer. At your first visit, your care team will give you a realistic estimate based on your specific situation and history.

No. We work with you through every exercise. Your PT team monitors your form, tracks your response, and adjusts in real time. You will not leave with a handout and be told to figure it out on your own. That said, some patients do progress to a home maintenance program once their treatment is complete, which is a sign of success, not abandonment.
