UNDERSTANDING YOUR PAIN

Elbow, Wrist & Hand Pain: what to expect and why it happens.

Where this kind of pain shows up

Pain can show up along the outside or inside of the elbow, the wrist, the palm, or fingers. Many patients also describe numbness or tingling.

Why it happens

Pain in the elbow, wrist, or hand is usually a combination of soft tissue strain, joint mechanics, and how the neck and shoulder position the arm.

COMMON CAUSES

THE WELLSPRING APPROACH

Why team-based care produces better results.

Pain in the upper extremity almost always has more than one driver. At Wellspring, your team looks at all of it together.

NURSE PRACTITIONER

What they contribute

Evaluates the root cause. Orders imaging or diagnostic testing when appropriate. Ensures your treatment plan has a solid medical foundation before hands-on care begins.

PHYSICAL THERAPY TEAM

What they contribute

Manual therapy, movement retraining, and targeted exercise to restore function and reduce pain. Your PT team works with you through every exercise. Identifies and corrects the muscle imbalances and movement patterns contributing to your pain.

MASSAGE THERAPIST

What they contribute

Targeted, therapeutic work designed to address the soft tissue tension and restriction that contributes to your pain. Coordinated with your PT plan. 60-minute sessions using deep tissue and hot stone techniques.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Yes, in most cases. Carpal tunnel is driven by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, often combined with tightness through the forearm, shoulder, and neck. Targeted PT, nerve glides, and soft tissue work address those drivers directly. Most patients with carpal tunnel improve significantly without surgery, especially when they get hands-on care before symptoms become severe.

Yes. Chronic tennis elbow can be stubborn, but it is very treatable with the right approach. We combine progressive forearm loading, soft tissue work, and SoftWave therapy when appropriate. Many patients who have been dealing with tennis elbow for six months or longer see meaningful improvement within a few weeks of consistent care.

Sometimes. Splints and braces can help in specific situations, especially at night for carpal tunnel. They are a tool, not a treatment plan. Your PT team will tell you whether bracing fits your case and how to use it without becoming dependent on it.

Numbness is worth getting evaluated, especially if it wakes you up at night, gets worse over time, or comes with weakness. Most causes are musculoskeletal and treatable. Some causes need a more urgent evaluation. Your nurse practitioner can help sort that out at your first visit.

Yes. Post-surgical recovery is one of the more common reasons patients come to Wellspring. We work with your surgical timeline and protocols and build a recovery plan that supports the healing process. Hands-on PT combined with therapeutic massage often produces faster, more complete recovery than home exercise alone.

No. You do not need imaging before your first visit. If imaging would be helpful to clarify your diagnosis, your nurse practitioner can order it as part of your care.
